Movie Review – "Creep" by Tim HanniganPosted by:In a word – WOW! This is a fantastic horror film. Part of the Midnight Madness film series at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film tells the story of Kate (Franka Potente) who falls asleep on a platform in the London subway system, only to awaken after the last train has left and the station is completely locked down.
As she tries to find her way out of the station, she discovers that there is someone, or something, living in the maze of tunnels in the underground, preying on homeless people and city workers. Kate must find a way to the surface before she becomes the next victim. The title is not just a catchy name, as this film is VERY creepy. The underground tunnels are eerie, and create the perfect atmosphere for the horrific imagery unleashed upon the audience by writer/director Christopher Smith. The acting is good, though the characters are not well developed. The film does fall into some of the traditional horror shortcomings, with some difficulties with logic, and of course the failure of the lead character to finish off the killer when given the opportunity. What this film does better than any movie I’ve seen in recent years, is make the audience jump out of their seats. This movie has more jolts than any haunted attraction you may visit this Halloween season. Those fortunate enough to get a ticket for the film were on the edge of their seats from the opening sequence right through to the final frame. I haven’t seen this type of reaction in a movie theater in a long time. The audience screamed, jumped, covered their eyes, and clutched the person next to them (forget romantic comedies-> this is a great date movie). In addition to the scares, there are some genuine laughs in the film, most of them are intentional. And for gore-hounds there are some truly gruesome moments. If you’re looking for Shakespeare, look somewhere else. But if you are looking for a roller coaster ride with thrills, chills and genuine scares, mark the date that this film gets released on your calendar - and bring a date.
