Another big scandal is about to happen in the world of sports. This time the main character is the head of the FIS, Johann Eliasch. It’s hard to believe what he says about athletes from Russia and Belarus.
After the president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, announced that he would allow competitors from Russia and Belarus to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics, a storm erupted.
The nations of the world reacted quickly, and 34 countries signed a joint statement opposing such a possibility including Poland, the United States or Great Britain.
When this seemed to be a clear signal coming from various parts of the world regarding such speculations, the “bomb” was detonated by the head of the FIS, Johan Elias. Because … he supported Bach’s position!
“I think it is important for every sports organization to show solidarity and support the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in these difficult times,” Eliash told NRK.
The core values of the IOC are based on the fact that sport should not be politicized, but should focus on athletes and peace. He added that these values are very important.
In his opinion, sport should change for Russians and Belarusians. Why? “Because if sports become politicized, it could be the end of sports as we know it,” he said.
Considering what the Russians are doing in Ukraine, his next words are very shocking. Sport is a human right. We must believe in and defend human rights.
