Brazil this week waived the requirement for foreign travelers arriving in it to present a certificate of vaccination against the Corona virus. This decision was made despite the recommendation of the National Health Regulatory Authority. Earlier, President Jair Bolsonaro compared such commitment to a leash on which an animal is led.
‘You cannot discriminate against people’
Brazil’s Minister of Health, Marcelo Quiroga, told reporters that “people cannot be discriminated against on the basis of vaccination or lack of vaccination in order to impose restrictions.”
At the same time, the minister indicated that with the exact characteristics of the still unknown Omicron variant, Brazil will need a five-day quarantine of non-vaccinated travelers, as recommended by the health watchdog Anvis.
After this period, the minister said, with a negative PCR test, foreigners who travel to Brazil as tourists “will be able to take advantage of the wonderful charms of Brazil.” So far, the only requirement for travelers has been to submit a negative PCR test report.
“Sometimes it is better to lose your life than to lose your freedom,” added Quiroga, echoing Jair Bolsonaro’s earlier words.
President’s Announcement
The president of Brazil is not a vaccinated person. The leader rejected Anfisa’s recommendation to introduce a “Covid passport”.
– We asked why the health passport? What is this rope they want to put on the Brazilians? Where is our freedom? I would rather die than lose my freedom, Jair Bolsonaro declared.
According to Agence France-Presse, Brazil has so far registered 615,000 jobs. deaths due to COVID-19.
