Her opponent was the candidate of the United Opposition Alliance for Hungary, 79-year-old lawyer and economist Peter Rona, who in 1956 emigrated with his family to the United States, where he worked in government administration and then in the banking sector. He holds a law degree from Oxford University. After the political change, Ron returned to Hungary. In 2010 he became a member of the Supervisory Board of the Hungarian National Bank and began working as a lecturer at the University of Oxford’s Blackfriars Hall. He also collaborated with environmental party Polityka May Be Different.

The President of Hungary is the representative in the first place. He is elected for a five-year term by the National Assembly with a majority of at least two-thirds of the votes. If Parliament fails to vote in the first two voting rounds, a simple majority must be obtained in the third round. The new head of state must be elected at least 30 days before the end of the office of the current head of state.

The current president, as of May 10, 2012, was Janos Ader – politician and co-founder of Fidesz.
