According to the media, Walentina Gatua passed away in Mariupol on April 14. She participated in the war in Ukraine since its inception on February 24. The regional newspaper Miasto y Obioateli wrote that she was a sergeant in the medical platoon of the DRL’s rifle battalion. She was killed by a mortar shell.

After the last Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014, she and her husband moved to the Donetsk Oblast, which is occupied by pro-Moscow separatists. Both served in the armed forces of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic. Her husband died last year in border battles with Ukrainian forces.

After the invasion began, Gałatowa was sent deep into Ukraine. In the end, she ended up in Mariupol. Since women in the Russian army could not serve in direct combat on the front, she was assigned to serve as a paramedic.
