The supplemental project “Dirty Dancing” was announced as early as 2020, but while working on the script, the film still lacked a director. We now know that it will be Jonathan Levine who has confirmed that the most important thing to him is the presence of Jennifer Gray in the film, which will combine the iconic image with the most recent one slated for 2024.
She played the beloved Gray, and dance coach Patrick Swayze died of cancer in 2009. The creators, however, talk to the actor’s heirs about “somehow taking into account his existence.” The names of the other representatives invited to the project are not known yet.
Currently, the director has revealed that they are trying to get as many people out of the original movie as possible. Among the neighborhoods we remember are Cynthia Rhodes and Jane Brooker. Levine also confirmed that the sequel will contain music from the original film, but also hip-hop music from the ’90s.
Filming is expected to begin in 2022, and the premiere is scheduled to begin in 2024.
Director: “Dirty Dancing” has always been one of my favorite films
In a statement posted by Liongate, Levine admitted:
The original “Dirty Dancing” has always been one of my favorite movies, but I never imagined I’d be directing a sequel. But while I was involved with the script, I fell in love with the characters (both new and old), the ’90s town of Catskills and the music that would swing between songs from the original movie and ’90s hip-hop. Adolescence and youth, I promise we will not ruin your childhood. We will approach it with ambition, but most of all love.
Set in the late ’90s, Jennifer Gray will once again play Frances “Baby” Houseman, who returns to the place of the previous story as a dance instructor. However, like the original, the sequel will focus on the story of another young woman who will go through an accelerated path of growth and experience her first love at a summer camp.
Levine wrote the script with Elizabeth Chomko. Castings are currently underway to select young actors for the main roles. Not only would Gray return to the role of Papa, but he would also produce the sequel.
“Dirty Dancing” – more than just a movie
According to Lionsgate, “Dirty Dancing” is the best-selling title in the studio’s catalog.
In 1987, Emil Ardolino directed a seemingly ordinary story about a young girl from a wealthy household who falls in love with a dance instructor named Johnny (Sweezy) at a resort in the Catskills, New York. Although everything separates them, they share a love of dancing. Mutual hatred turns into infatuation over time, and this turns into a violent feeling.
“Dirty Dancing is more than just a movie, it’s still a rite of passage for young people,” says Erin Westerman, Lionsgate’s production director. “As we approach the second chapter of this story, we know we have to honor the depth and warmth of the original,” she added.
The film brought both actors fame, and brought in nearly 220 million dollars in ticket sales. In addition, it won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song “(I Spent) The Time of My Life”, and today it is a popular song at christenings, weddings and other big celebrations. He also won a Grammy Award.
Let us remind you that the upcoming movie isn’t the first movie based on “Dirty Dancing” (the Polish title “Spinning Sex” has never been seen before and was deemed a bug). In 2004, there was a previous failed story (a story about events before the original version) called “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights”. The new TV movie featuring Abigail Breslin and Colt Pratis was made in 2017 and it was an absolute disaster.
It remains to be hoped that Levine’s film will not be a failure.
