The Moldovan parliament passed a law banning the broadcasting of Russian news on radio and television. The new regulation also states that 50 percent of foreign programming broadcast in the country must come from the United States, European Union countries or countries that are signatories to the European Convention on Television across Borders.
According to the government of Natalia Gavriliti, the new regulations are intended to protect Moldovan society from the deluge of Russian propaganda distorting the political situation, mainly related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
On the basis of the act on the so-called information security, the Parliament of Moldova has banned television broadcasts of information, political, analytical and military programs from countries that have not ratified the 1989 European Convention on Transnational Television. One of them is Russia, which has several television and radio stations in Moldova.
The new regulation also states that 50 percent of foreign programs broadcast in Moldova come from the United States, European Union countries or countries that are signatories to the European Convention on Television across Borders.
The new law allows broadcasting of Russian TV material on channels in Moldova, but only as series, music and entertainment programmes.
