Transport plane crashed in northern Greece

According to the Greek News Agency, witnesses saw a burning plane and heard explosions.

“At 10:45 p.m. I was surprised by the sound of the plane’s engine. I went out and saw a burning plane,” Giorgos Archontopoulos told ERT public television.

The machine fell into an undeveloped area.

According to local authorities, seven fire engines have already arrived at the crash site, but firefighters can’t get close to the wreck as the explosions shake it all the time.

Greek media reported that the machine that crashed near Kavala was a Ukrainian Antonov. The plane was on its way from the Serbian city of Nice to the Jordanian capital, Amman.

According to the media, the Antonov crew reported technical problems and requested emergency landing permits at the Kavala airport, but could not perform any maneuvers.

ERT TV, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the Antonov plane was on fire before it crashed.

There is no official information on the number of people on board yet. According to ERT, there were eight of them. Greek television also reported that the Ukrainian plane was carrying a “dangerous” cargo.
