From Wednesday to Thursday night, a fire completely destroyed a duck breeding building owned by Connords du Lock Brom in Ange-Guardian, Montreux.
Philip O’Shaughnessy, the company’s chief executive, who spoke to the QMI agency this morning, said a few thousand ducks were said to have been killed in the fire. However, this is a provisional estimate.
“The building has a capacity of 12,000, but it is not complete. We are at the time of evaluations and impacts. We will establish how we can continue the production and distribution of our products,” he said.
According to Mr O’Shaughnessy, the company is said to have lost 5 to 10% of its current herd.
The cause of the disaster is not yet known, but all point to an electrical problem, he said.
No employees were at the scene at the time of the fire, so no injuries were reported to company employees.
The fire broke out at the Connords to Lock Brom facility in Rang Saint-Georges in the municipality of Ang-Guardian, about twenty kilometers west of Cronby.
Norton-headquartered Connords to Lock Prom also has fifteen farm buildings in Monterey, similar to the building that burned Thursday night. The Ang-Guardian site was already on fire in 2016. In the same year, two other fires damaged the company’s facilities, including a slaughterhouse in Noldon and a livestock building in Racine, where tens of thousands of ducks perished.
