Enters the 79th Venice International Film Festival in history. Prizes were handed out at the Lido on Saturday evening. This year’s main competition included 23 films, which were judged by a jury headed by Hollywood star Julianne Moore. A film directed by a woman won the Golden Lion for the second year in a row.
The Venice International Film Festival is the oldest event of its kind in the world and one of the so-called Big Five alongside the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, the Sundance Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. Each year, the Venetian island of Lido is filled with the greatest stars of author and mainstream cinema. An Italian festival verdict is often indicative before Oscar season.
The main competition is of course the most important of the four festival competitions. This year’s winner will chair the jury Oscar Award Julian Moore. Together with her, 23 titles were evaluated by: Argentine director Mariano Cohen, Italian director and screenwriter Leonardo Di Costanzo, winner of last year’s Golden Prize. the lionFrench director and screenwriter Audrey Diwan, Iranian actress Leila Hatami, British writer and screenwriter Kozo Ishiguro, and Spanish director and screenwriter Rodrigo Soroguin.
Venice 2022. The most awaited address
For the first time since 2020, this year’s edition of the festival is being held without pandemic restrictions. There are many long-awaited titles in the main competition. Among them is “The Banshees of Inisherin” – the latest black comedy by Martin McDonagh, creator of the Academy Award-winning movie “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”. Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu presented Bardo, A False Chronicle of a Fistful of Facts, inspired by the Greek tragedy of Roman Gavras “Athena”, while Andrew Dominic presented “Blonde” – a biopic of Marilyn Monroe starring Anna de Amaras. After its premiere, the movie was critically acclaimed this year, and lasted 14 minutes.
Also featured in the main competition was Joanna Hogg’s new film “The Immortal Daughter” starring Tilda Swinton. Luca Guadagnino competed for the Golden Lion from Bones & All and Daren Aronofsky from The Whale. Florian Zeller’s new movie “The Son,” the next part of the trilogy that “Father” started with Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, has been critically acclaimed.
This year’s edition of the Venice Film Festival was opened by Noah Baumbach “White Noise”.
