Rice milk is rich in valuable vitamins, minerals and fibers that strengthen the body’s condition. Although it has many pro-health properties, this does not mean that it is beneficial to use it regularly. This food product is based on rice, in which often accumulates arsenic, which is toxic to our bodies.
This is confirmed by the results of the latest research conducted by British scientists. Researchers from the University of Aberdeen decided to check the composition of store-bought rice milk. As it turned out, in most of these types of drinks you can find amounts of arsenic three times higher than the permissible standards for the content of this element in water in the United States and the European Union.
Experts note that much less of this harmful component is found in rice milk prepared at home. According to UK researchers, a drink made from white rice, which has been purified from the bran containing arsenic, is a healthy alternative to milk based on whole grain rice, the brown variety of the grain.
Why is arsenic dangerous?
An increase in this element in our daily menu promotes the occurrence of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Arsenic also has carcinogenic properties, which increases the risk of skin, lung, urinary system, kidney and liver cancers. Its very high concentration in the body can also cause inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract as well as keratosis, inflammation and discoloration of the skin. Therefore, for the sake of our health, we should reduce or completely abandon the consumption of rice drinks contaminated with arsenic.
