Hubert Hurkacz won one match three hundred matches with Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, advancing to the Toronto quarter-finals. In the first round he had a goodbye, and in the second round the Japanese Kei Nishikori presented the match. In the semi-finals, he faced Poland’s Danio Medvedev, who this year ousted him in the 1/8 finals at Wimbledon. This time the winner was the Russian 2:6, 7:6 (6), 7:6 (5).
Tennis players admired their strength, accuracy and diligence right from the start. They put in a great performance and the first five games went really fast. Hurkacz sensed his opportunity and launched an attack. He’s been at the top in the little field game, sending out some pretty impressive returns, and showing off lightning acceleration. Medvedev felt pressured and gave the app a double error.
Hurkacz was affected by an active attack and a reliable defensive one. His game was properly balanced, he made good decisions and effectively changed directions. He wisely built his attacks and finished a lot of points on the net. After defending the break point, he raised to 5: 2. Medvedev was disorganized and made many mistakes. In the eighth inning, the Russian eliminated two set-pieces, but his double error and loss ended the first match.

The pole changed the tempo very well, showing not only strength, but also playing with strong sliding and cleverness in the net. He was well positioned on the court and perfectly read his opponent’s intentions. Medvedev doubled down and tried to outrun the pole. However, the Wrocław native has gained an advantage with better service and return.
In the second half, Medvedev again risked missing a pass in the sixth game, but saved himself after blocking two break points. He had no more moments of crisis at the site. The runner-up in the standings was helpless in the Hurkacz matches, which did not give his opponent any chance to break. In a tiebreak, the pole’s momentum weakened. He broke three attackers and hit the ball into the net. It was just too much against an opponent who didn’t give away points for free in this part of the game. Hurkacz defended the first ball with a large cross, but in the second he delivered a forehand.
In the third set, Hurkacz had a break point at 1-0, but hit a sloppy comeback. Later, the servers again leveled their games fairly easily. This was the case until one tennis player at first, and then another, found himself in dire straits. Medvedev could lead 5:3, but at the break point he put back. At 5:5 Hurkacz had a chance to break (after a double fault from his opponent), but the Russian defended himself with a superb shot. In the tiebreaker, he held second place in the standings again in cold blood. There was only one small breach in it. It came to him due to the fault of the rear pole. The Wrocław player saved two balls from the matches, but Medvedev used the third ball as a trophy.
In the match, which lasted two hours and 16 minutes, Medvedev sent 23 aces, Hurkacz scored nine. The Russian scored 10 points less (102-112) but will fight for the final. He recorded 38 closing strokes with 40 non-forced errors. The Pole got 33 straight wins and 33 fouls. There were two achievements in the match and Hurkacz achieved them in the first set. Medvedev only got two break points.
For the Russian, this is the 35th game the team has won (balance 35-9) and fourth apart in the semi-finals of 2021. He is still in the fight for the third title of the season (Marseille, Mallorca). On Saturday, they will face Frenchman Gael Monfils or American John Isner in the final.
