A student from Poznan creates art from microbes and bacteria

Martina Petrzak is a third year student of veterinary medicine at the University of Life Sciences in Poznań.

A student from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań was qualified for the Agar Art Competition as one of 85 people and the only one from Poland.

Competition organized by the American Microbiological Society. Agar Art combines science and art. Artist scientists use naturally colored or genetically modified microbes as paint and bacteriological agar as a canvas. Martina Petrzak created portraits of the most prominent microbiologists: Robert Koch, Louis Pasteur and Udo Bogoid, Polish microbiologist, Koch’s student and father of the first veterinarian Helena Georgilyowiczowa in particular– informs Iona Celik, spokesperson for the Poznan University of Life Sciences.

The plates were painted with different types of bacteria, the bank of which was created by prof. UPP Dr. Hub. Agnieszka Pękała-Safińska of the Department of Preclinical Sciences and Infectious Diseases of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of UPP“- he adds.
