Ebola case detected in a city of 4 million in Africa

The Ebola virus was first discovered in Côte d’Ivoire more than a quarter of a century ago. The World Health Organization stated that the case was confirmed in Abidjan, the country’s largest city, with a population of 4 million.

Medical authorities do not yet know if the infection is linked to this year’s outbreak in neighboring Guinea, which was considered under control in mid-June. Additional research to clarify the matter, the World Health Organization reported.

The Ebola virus was found in an 18-year-old woman. It is known that the 18-year-old girl came from Guinea to the city by bus on Thursday – and this raises fears that her companions may be infected.

Ivory Coast Health Minister Pierre Ngo Demba said the virus was detected in a woman on Friday. The patient was under medical care.

The 18-year-old came to Côte d’Ivoire from north-central Guinea. The area in which she began her journey is located 760 kilometers from the city of Guic, where Ebola cases were discovered at the beginning of the year.

The Ebola virus is transmitted through contact with an infected person’s body fluids. Early on, symptoms are similar to other diseases such as malaria.

This is the first case of Ebola to be detected in a large city like Abidjan since 2016 and the first in Côte d’Ivoire in 27 years.
