Iga Świątek fans will have to wait until Saturday to see the current WTA ranking leader in action as part of the BNP Paribas Open 2023. Meanwhile, her potential opponent has changed hands in the second round.

The ladders for the prestigious competition were drawn up in Indian Wells on Monday. Iga Świątek was, of course, seeded “one” and thus got a free ticket at the start. Her opponent in the second round was the American Claire Leo or the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck.

Who is Swiątek’s competitor?

Meanwhile, there has been a change. Van Uytvanck resigned from the BNP Paribas Open 2023. Her place was taken by Anna Karolina Schmidlova, known to Polish audiences from her performances in Katowice. The Slovakian was eliminated at the final stage of qualifying for the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells, but luck smiled at her.

Świątek will defend his title on Saturday. She will then face match-winner Leo Schmiedlova in the second round. A gift for the fans has been prepared by Canal + Sport, which will show the Polish lady’s first match on YouTube (more here).

Van Uytvank isn’t the only tennis player to pull out of a start in sunny California. Tamara Korbach will also not play in Indian Wells. According to the resignation of the German-Hungarian Dalma Gelfi, who will face American Danielle Collins in the first round as a “lucky loser” from the disqualification.

Three Polish women on the main staircase?

Magdalena Fręch is also on the waiting list to enter the main tournament. The Lodz citizen easily lost in the decisive stage of qualification to the American Ashlyn Kruger (more here), but due to the high position she was considered from the very beginning as the so-called. Bad luck.

Fręch has to wait patiently for the next spot on the ladder to become available. He has until Saturday, because in practice he can also replace the seeded tennis player who received a bye in the first round. If the 25-year-old gets her chance, three White Reds will play for Indian Wells: Świątek, Fręch and Magda Linette.
