Erdogan stressed that “Finland has taken concrete steps to fulfill the promises made by Helsinki in the past.”
Another country awaiting Ankara’s approval is Sweden. Erdogan said Ankara’s talks with Stockholm would continue.
An important decision from Erdogan. The President of Finland answers
“Finland’s membership in NATO would not be complete without Sweden,” said Finnish President Sauli Niinisto in Ankara on Friday, commenting on Turkey’s announcement of starting the process of ratifying his country’s accession to NATO.
“This is definitely a very important message for the whole of Finland,” said the Finnish president, thanking Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the decision to start ratifying Finland’s accession to NATO.
Finland, which shares a border of more than 1,300 km with Russia, had previously said it would not join NATO without Sweden in solidarity with its western neighbour. It is not known whether today’s announcement will change this situation.
After Turkey’s ratification, Hungary is currently the only NATO member that has not decided to ratify Finland’s accession to NATO.
