Zlatan Ibrahimovic set a record. It’s just a nice spot for Milan

Milan reached the Champions League quarter-finals in March but has since failed in two Serie A matches, and this time Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goal did not save the Rossoneri from a 3-1 defeat by Udinese Calcio.

The highlight of the first half was Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shot on goal. The Milan forward became the oldest goalscorer in Serie A history, at the age of 41 years and 166 days on Saturday. The Swede withstood the pressure and scored with a repeat penalty kick in extra time. The former record holder Alessandro Costacurta also scored a historic feat from the penalty spot at the Udine stadium, so Zlatan’s goal was symbolic.

Milan had a problem with the opponent. Already in the ninth minute, Udinese took the lead, thanks to a shot by Roberto Pereira. In first-half injury time, things seemed to fall apart for the hosts as they conceded a goal to make it 1-1, Andrea Sutil was shown a red card for his behavior off the bench. That didn’t stop Udinese from regaining the lead with Beto’s shot before the break.

The Rossoneri in the second half had to chase the opponent again, but instead of scoring a goal, they missed another at 1: 3. Kingsley Ihesibo increased Udinese’s lead. Milan players still hoped that this goal would be disallowed, but video verification did not convince the referee.

The surprising defeat hinders the Rossoneri’s path to promotion to the next edition of the Champions League. Stefano Pioli’s side remain fourth in the standings but will lose that spot on Sunday if Roma win the Derby della Capitale against Lazio. In turn, the awakened Udinese remains a candidate to play in the Europa League.
