Québec, gourmet city: discover a new chain where you can have lunch anytime

Are you craving lunch on a Tuesday night but your partner wants a burger? You’ll be served by the new Au Petit Chalet chain, which offers all-day breakfast and booze at affordable prices.

The concept has something to please: hearty breakfasts from 7am to 10pm and a menu of gourmet burgers in the evening. Add tempting starters like nachos or melted brie and the option of a glass of wine or beer for the price the restaurant pays.

“It’s a very unique concept,” begins Nathan Todd, co-owner of the chain, which is part of Groupe Blanchet, proudly.

The company was so enamored with the fine breakfasts of Au Petit Chalet, a family restaurant in Plainville, that it purchased the trademark to franchise and launch a new chain in Quebec.

Gargantuan plates

The restaurant, which opened its first branch in Bouvier last week, stands out for its very generous portions.

“This is the place where the plates are by far the biggest. It’s greedy and our slogan is not for nothing: “It’s delicious pork”, says Nathan.

My visit allowed me to see that this is not just a formula!

Plates are beautiful without compromising on quality.

Everything is homemade, like finger-lickin’ good potatoes with maple-smoked ham and a delicious spice blend. Those who, like me, judge the quality of a breakfast restaurant by the care taken in preparing the potatoes will not be disappointed.

The menu offers many sweet and savory combinations, such as the festin du salad, which includes a banana and Nutella waffle, meat, egg, potato and toast.

Plates range in price from $13 to $22, a good value.

Warm decor

As the name suggests, the atmosphere is relaxed and inspired by a recording studio. Plume-shaped light fixtures, brick, wooden slats and red and black checkered fabric inserts add comfort and a warm touch. The giant screens installed on the side of the benches act as a window and make you feel in the middle of nature through a 3D video. Charm!

A second branch will open next week on Maguire Avenue, in the sprawling complex that housed Cochon Dingue and most recently Chaz.

“We’re actually going to fill a need because Maguire Street doesn’t have a lunch offer,” Nathan rightly points out.

The chain wants to capture the hearts of Quebecers, one plate at a time, and then expand elsewhere in the province.

Delicious brunches

Since last November, Le District Gourmet in Sainte-Foy has been serving weekends from 9am to 2pm. Menus from French bistro L’Atrium and Mlle Inès are available. The eggs Benedictine casserole is worth the detour, as is Miss Inez’s breakfast burger. The more adventurous can’t miss the Chicken ‘n Waffles: fried chicken, bacon and cheese curds served between two pieces of waffle.

Local products

La Signature restaurant in Limoilou serves delicious brunches highlighting local and organic ingredients. Located in the former Fun en bouche, this restaurant somehow maintains a tradition of high quality lunches. The selection is huge and will appeal to vegetarians and meat lovers alike. I fell in love with the beef strips, gouda cheese, mushrooms and scallion beans. A little joy!
