Robert Lewandowski’s bad streak is over. His number of minutes without scoring ended at 466. He scored in the 82nd minute from an extremely close range. Earlier, he even scored a goal, but the referee disallowed it for minimal offside.
Barcelona played worse again. She has only scored two goals in her last five matches. The previous goal secured victory in Sunday’s match against Atletico, but before that they lost to Real Madrid 4-0 in the semi-finals of the King’s Cup, and then only tied 0-0 with Girona and Getafe. Now she played even worse and did not match Rayo 1: 2. Thus ended eight consecutive unbeaten matches in the league.
The curse of Barcelona
Rato is the real bane of Barcelona. The club from Vallecas, a working-class neighborhood in the Madrid agglomeration, has patented stars from Catalonia. So what if he hasn’t been at his best lately and only wins one out of ten matches. However, he can play with big businessmen. Earlier this season, he beat Real Madrid 3-2, and he’s had a way in Barcelona for a long time.
They went undefeated in four straight matches, won three and drew 0-0 in the season opener. This was Lewandowski’s first appearance in La Liga. He did not score after that, but then began to shoot, thanks to which he still leads the list of scorers in La Liga. In the match against Rayo, he improved his scoring to 18 goals.
Despite the defeat, Barcelona remains at the top of the Spanish League and is 11 points ahead of second-placed Real, who does not take advantage of the opportunity to chase Barcelona. On Tuesday, the Madrid team lost 4-2 to Girona.
Bad start for Barcelona
Barcelona have only played one good game in recent weeks, when they beat Atletico on Sunday. Xavi made only one change to the starting eleven compared to this match. In midfield, Pedri replaced Sergio Busquets. The 20-year-old has been included in Barcelona’s first team for the first time since February 12. Then he recovered from the injury, returned to the match on Sunday, and now he appears on the field from the first minute.
Barcelona had problems from the start of the match. In the eighth minute, Essy Balazon scored, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved his shot. In the 17th minute, the hosts had a better chance. Sergio Camilo found himself in a one-on-one confrontation with Ter Stegen, but the German goalkeeper proved his class once again.
Two minutes later, he finally gave up. Alvaro García hit hard and Rayo took the lead.
Four minutes later, Lewandowski had a great opportunity to equalize, but lost a one-on-one duel with Stole Dmitrievsky.
Lewandowski’s long-awaited break
At the end of the first half, the Pole finally found the net. However, his happiness was short-lived, as he reported the offside to the referee. The VAR referees analyzed this situation because the offside was minimal and in the end the goal was disallowed. Lewandowski still couldn’t break through.
Moments later, Rayo threatened Barcelona’s goal again, but Camilo’s header was saved by Ter Stegen.
The beginning of the second half was not very successful. Frenkie de Jong lost the ball in the 53rd minute before left-back Fran Garcia found himself in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and beat the Barcelona goalkeeper. Rayo was leading 2-0.
Then Barcelona played as if they had accepted defeat. It didn’t create a serious chance even for a long time. Finally, however, Frank Casey struck from distance, blocking his shot. The Polish striker grabbed the errant ball as fast as he could and fired home.
For him, the goal probably means a lot, but it didn’t change much for the match, because Barcelona lost anyway. Plus, she did it in a very bad way. Regardless, he’s still on his way to the championship.
