In November last year, the Sony PlayStation 5 console appeared. Compared to its predecessor, the equipment with the number 5 in the name was distinguished by an incomparably better working culture and lower temperatures under load. At the console’s premiere, we applauded how quiet the PlayStation 5 even when loaded with new games for so long. A few weeks ago, we learned that Sony is offering a new review of the PlayStation 5 for sale – first it’s about the digital variant without an optical drive, then the regular version also got a new one. One of the changes was the reduced weight of the device – the differences between the revisions reached 300 grams. A video has appeared on the web that reveals exactly what changes have occurred in the console.
The new version of the PlayStation 5 console has a low-quality heat sink, which causes temperatures to rise under load on a good day. It is difficult at present to determine whether the changes are dictated by a simple desire to maximize profits or are related to the constant shortage of ingredients.

The first version of the Sony PlayStation 5 console in Poland bears the designation CFI-1016, while the new version is sold with the code CFI-1116. One of the changes that does not affect the cooling system is a new, easy-to-remove screw for the console base. There were more changes in the interior. The first adjustment of the cooling system goes back to the fan. Although it comes from the same charge, it has longer and more curved blades. While we should have no objection to the new fan, the biggest cuts have been made to the heat sink.

This is much smaller, which immediately catches the eye after carefully disassembling the console. The author of the video below is tentatively convinced that the heat sink in the new version is half the size of the original. According to the first tests, the air temperature in the rear nozzles of the device was 3-5 degrees higher than in the previous version. At the moment, we don’t know how a specially designed cooling system will handle it in the long run. The cuts could be dictated by a common desire to maximize profits (a few cents savings on one console, but when we go to the millionth we’re talking about a lot more money), but on the other hand, availability of individual components may also be an issue. It’s also worth noting that the truncated version of the cooling system didn’t negatively impact the PS5’s work culture.
