A project of such a solution was presented by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, who boasted the results of their work in the journal “Nano energy”Then, a summary of the most important information appeared on the university’s website. Smart lenses or contact lenses are already available in the market, but it is still a new technology that needs improvement. One of the most important aspects is the issue of power supply.

Just like smart glasses The lenses also connect to smartphones or other similar devicesHowever, a built-in battery is needed for its proper operation. However, charging them in the glasses case is not a big problem In the case of lenses, the matter is more complicated. Finding efficient batteries that will extend the life of such a device is not easy, especially since they have to be very small.

Lee Seok-woo and his team decided to take a slightly different approach – Thanks to this, smart lenses were created that charge while wearing them, and according to the creators, their design will remain effective after 200 charging cycles.. How is this possible? The aforementioned battery is made of health-friendly materials with a glucose coating. This coating can react with sodium and chlorine ions when The lens with the battery is in a solution of salt and water, to act as a circuit to generate electricity. Since sodium and chlorine ions are also present in tears, it is practically possible to recharge lenses while wearing them.

As Lee Seokwoo adds:

Experiments show that The battery is capable of producing a current of 45 microamps and a power of 210 microwattsenough to work most of the day. Our tears, in turn, are supposed to extend the life of our lenses – we’re talking about one hour for every 12 hours. a job. When not in use, the battery can be stored in a concentrated salt solution containing large amounts of glucose, potassium, and sodium ions to allow recharging.

The team is currently working on extending the life of the device and collaborating with contact lens manufacturers to bring this solution to market.
