– There will be a lot of sounds that I’m crazy. “But I want to try something new,” says Piotr Lysek. The three-time world championship medalist in pole vault is changing his sports regimen. We’ll soon see him in the octagon at the MMA Gala of Fame!
– I want to make some changes. Doing some crazy stuff again, getting rejuvenated, and showing the side I used to be. Even though I know there will be a lot of votes I’m crazy. “But you have to come up with something to do this sport more,” he said.
After the pole vault competitions at the World Championships in Budapest, Piotr Lisek told reporters these words (More here) that soon there will be big changes in his life. But at that time, he did not want to reveal what he was going to do. Does he want to skydive, for example, or climb Mount Everest?
Today everything is clear. Piotr Lesek surprised everyone with his style and decided to try a different sport. The three-time world championship medalist will be one of the stars of the Fame MMA Gala 20, which will take place on September 29 in Szczecin.
Where did this decision come from and what prompted it? Is he ready for hate? What do those close to him think of his idea and what about his career in pole vaulting? In an interview with WP SportoweFakty, Piotr Lysek reveals the behind the scenes of his surprise move.
Tomasz Skrzypczyński, WP SportoweFakty: When you said at the World Championships in Budapest that you would change something in your life, no one could have guessed that you would decide to fight in mixed martial arts. I will ask briefly – why?
Piotr Lysek: First, let’s stress one thing: I’m not done with pole vault. This is my love story. I’m too young to retire, which is my fox craze, but I just want to take a break from it for a while. I’ve been with you for a long time in athletics and I need a starting point.
I know there will be a lot of voices that I’m crazy. But I want to try something new, something that will also give me a boost to pole training. I don’t put it aside at all. On the contrary, training in martial arts will give me a lot.
Have you thought long and hard about accepting such an offer?
The offer was made to me a long time ago, but I haven’t taken it seriously for a long time. Why? I’m not very good at wrestling! I just have an obsession. I do yoga regularly, I do stretching, and once it turned out I got on the mat and started doing yoga in a slightly weird way. I love that either. It turned out later that the organization’s authorities still wanted me with them. Then I started thinking seriously.
Do workouts give you a hard time?
It’s a completely different journey. And anyone who says they can easily hold out for a few rounds in the octagon doesn’t know what they’re talking about. During the first rehearsals, I was trampled so much that it didn’t even fit in my head.

You definitely know how most fans view alien organizations. They are often associated with pathology and mediocre athleticism.
I assure you, I will be myself, I will be Pyotr Lysek. I do not intend to get into conflicts or swear. I am an athlete and although it may sound great, I want to set a good example. The organization’s authorities also make sure that the events are of an ever higher standard.
This past weekend I was in Krakow for the Fame MMA Gala. how did you find it?
MMA fame has come a long way and a lot has changed over the years. I was at their second concert and the athletic level was low. Compared to the latter, the change was huge, as it is a great spectacle, show, and entertainment with a high sports level.
Are you ready for the hate and posts that Lisek “sold”?
Money is not my motivator. They can say and write that I am lying. Of course, these matters are not of little importance, but I will say in a slightly immodest manner that I have earned and invested my money in order to be able to refuse such an offer.
Did your wife understand this decision?
What does the wife say? Wait a minute… (At this point Lysek turns to his partner) Ola, what do you think? Say no comment!
I’m joking of course, he’s very supportive of me. And when she found out, she was so supportive. And I didn’t think about it until later, because it wouldn’t be easy for me. But she knows I’m a little crazy and that I need to. After all, there is no ordinary person in pole vault either, the training is really dangerous.
How did your coach, Marcin Szczepinski, react?
The coach also supports me, although he is not completely satisfied. However, I realize that I need to take a break and recharge my batteries this way.
Do you even like what you do?
I love what I do!
I ask because your words to TVP Sport this year resounded so strongly that “you have to find joy again to fully enjoy sport”.
Because not every moment is easy, in difficult moments it can be difficult. But when the payoff comes in the form of results, the satisfaction is enormous.
Fans might be surprised, because you have the image of an ever-smiling guy who can advertise toothpaste.
Oh, there have been such conversations, and more than once!
Have you ever worn a certain smile mask, even though it looked bad on the inside?
I don’t want to say that Lasik looks like a little joker, but maybe I smile a lot sometimes. However, I am a positive person. I’m lucky because I don’t treat pole vaulting as a job, but it’s my hobby. I have my ups and downs like everyone else. There was a time when it wasn’t really easy.
Will you reveal the details?
There have been seasons where I have jumped worse. And there were also things that had nothing to do with sports. But then I smiled anyway, and I always prefer to think positively. I’m not artificial. I was and still am a fun person, I love a joke and a lot of laughter. It’s my nature.
Maybe you got everyone used to the fact that no matter what happens, you are always good?
During interviews or on social media, we don’t want to show the difficult moments, maybe that’s understandable. I don’t want to cause regret here, everyone has a harder time. It doesn’t matter if you are a millionaire, farmer, athlete or cashier. It determines how we deal with problems.
