As of today, QD-OLED technology appears to provide the best results and highest image quality. Meanwhile, one of the hottest companies in the market seems to have a better idea. Eliminate most of the defects of OLED matrices.
QD-OLED is a combination of quantum dot technology and OLED matrices. Monitors and TVs equipped with this type of matrix provide excellent contrast, high brightness and a wide range of colors. No other mainstream technology provides such good results in so many parameters at the same time. However, it is difficult to call them ideal – OLED matrices also have drawbacks resulting from the relatively low durability of their components and the need to properly protect them.
Japanese company Shoei Chemical recently acquired US company Nanosys, a leading supplier of quantum dot nanocrystal coatings used in QD-OLED and QLED TVs and matrices. The new owner has very ambitious plans. He wants to use his new acquisition to accelerate research on EL-QD arrays.

EL-QD TVs. What is it and why do we need to learn another abbreviation?
EL-QD matrices aim to combine the advantages of OLED and QLED matrices. These arrays consist of nanostructures called electrophoretic quantum dots (EL-QDs), which emit light of the appropriate color when exposed to an electric current. Unlike OLED matrices, which use organic diodes, EL-QD matrices are based on inorganic materials, giving them durability and better resistance to screen burn-in.
Compared to QLED arrays, which use LED backlighting and a layer of passive quantum dots (PL-QD), EL-QD arrays do not require an additional light source and have better contrast and viewing angles. Well, how about a less complicated explanation?
The default features of EL-QD TVs and monitors are:
- High durability (low susceptibility to so-called afterimages)
- High brightness (due to high durability)
- Wide color palette coverage (due to high brightness and quantum technology
- Excellent contrast (no additional backlight is required in LCD matrices)
However, Nanosys calls its arrays NanoLED Industry wise The specific name is EL-QD mentioned. Unfortunately, a potential revolution remains a dream in the distant future. Research into EL-QD is still ongoing, and no effective technological process has been developed yet – meaning it is not yet possible to offer products with EL-QD arrays at any reasonable prices.
