Review of the game “Cyberpunk 2077: Widmo Wolności” from CD Projekt RED
“The Grid Runner Who Loved Me”
Author: Bartosz Czartoryski
It begins, as Master Hitchcock instructed, with an earthquake, but then the tension rises and falls, resembling either a sine wave, or rather a graph on a heart monitor recording vital signs; Perhaps this metaphor fits a little better here, which I will discuss in a moment. But don’t worry, everything goes according to plan, because the screenplay for “Phantom Liberty” was crafted so that moments of silence did not interfere with the explosive action, and the action of intense Hollywood montages did not obscure the scene. The gray life of the neon Night City, unfortunately lies somewhere next to the main story line.
And it is no coincidence that we are talking here about films, because the long-awaited addition to “Cyberpunk 2077” does not even try to hide its celluloid origins, starting with Carpenter, flirting with Bond, and ending with countless heist films, that is, stories about stylized tricks known from the screen . Tailor-made for a dynamic spectacle, the addition is first-rate narrative and plot, moving seamlessly between well-worn clichés, which are seamlessly remixed and interwoven with the original world invented by Mike Pondsmith, and today the CD-exclusive work of Project Red Team. In fact, we’re talking about the entire world of pop culture that spans animated series, games, books, and comics, and is a powerful global franchise.
For this reason, it’s all the more enjoyable for “Phantom Liberty” to be so cohesive and disciplined, especially against the backdrop of the disorganized situation that ran wild like a hyperactive child around the kindergarten, spilling a box of toys on the floor and asking us to find something he liked. As for here, we rarely go beyond the framework of the scenario imposed from above, which allowed us to constantly embroider the story with specific characters, motifs, and threads, but it is by no means a straight stitch.
