These were great days for the number six pair. Laura Siegemund and Wiera Zvonariwa were the last to reach the semi-finals, defeating Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in the group stage. Then, in the semi-finals, they were eliminated by the other two, Storm Hunter and Elise Mertens.

In Monday’s final, the German and Russian defeated the American-Australian pair of Nicole Melichar Martinez and Elaine Perez, playing in eighth place, 6:4, 6:4. Thanks to this, they became the winners of the doubles tournament of the 2023 WTA Finals.

The final match lasted one hour and 38 minutes. Both teams had plenty of break points, but there were problems using them. In the first show, the key point was a break of Perez’s serve in the third game. After that, the American and the Australian could make up for the loss, but the pass was blocked first by Siegmund and then by Zvonariwa. In the tenth game, the German and the Russian took advantage of the third set point.

In the second part, the picture of the game did not change. There was no shortage of opportunities in the beginning. In the third game, Melichar Martinez’s serve was broken, but after changing the ending the score became 2. After a while, Perez did not hold his serve and that was decisive. Sigmund and Zvonariwa were no longer surprised. In the tenth game, they used the third match ball when the representative of our western neighbors scored a point into the net.

In 2020, Siegmund and Zvonariwa won the US Open. This season, they reached the finals of the New York tournament, and two months later they turned out to be the best in the Tournament of Champions. This is a great success for experienced tennis players.

The 39-year-old Zvonariwa improved her balance in the doubles finals of the main series competition to 16-7. In the early 2000s and 2000s, she ranked second in the singles rankings and in 2008 she lost in the WTA Finals held in Doha, Qatar to American Venus Williams.

For 35-year-old Siegemund, this is her 14th major series doubles title (final balance 14-6). In July, the German came to Warsaw where she showed great courage on her way to the singles final. However, she did not face favorite Iga Świątek in the title match.
