Avdiivka and its surroundings are the area where the heaviest fighting is currently taking place. A very distinctive Russian T-72B3 tank was found in this area.
The Russian T-72B3 tank shown in the video below is equipped with the classic Russian “Field Modernization Package”. So we have the famous cage on the turret designed to protect against loads dropped from drones, additional bar armor on the sides and a camouflage that looks as if the tank is covered with feathers with a few branches attached.
This type of addition, which was most likely performed in the field, was theoretically supposed to provide camouflage properties similar to camouflage nets or even multi-spectral camouflage such as those seen on the CV90 infantry fighting vehicles. This masking not only effectively breaks up the silhouette of the object in daylight, but also reduces the thermal and radar signature of the object to which it is applied.
In the case of the Russian idea, it is clear that no one has completely covered the tank elements. This camouflage may work during the day, but it does not appear to be effective in the long term.

The T-72B3 tank is the relatively more modern Russian machine
T-72B3 tanks, produced since 2011, are the most numerous type of machine in the Russian army. The vehicles are equipped with a modern fire control system called Sosna-U. It is based on thermal imaging cameras Catherine-FC from France.
According to the “Military Balance 2021” report, the Russians had 1,150 tanks of this type at their disposal. However, it is very likely that this number will exceed 1,200 units in 2022. However, it should be noted that based on information collected by the Oryxspioenkop group, the Russians lost at least 350 T-72B3 tanks.
Despite these changes, most elements of the tank remained unchanged. The obsolete Kontakt-1 reactive shield was replaced only by the less obsolete Kontakt-5 shield in machines of the previous production series. The result is a machine that, for relatively little money, can provide comparable firepower to the newer T-90M, but at the cost of outdated protection.
