In February, Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed General Valery Zalozny as Supreme Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In an interview with the Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko evaluated the president's decision negatively.
Klitschko on Zelensky and the national unity government
Klitschko said that Zalozhny succeeded in leading the defense of Ukraine against “the largest and most powerful army in the world” for two years, and hence the Ukrainians linked his figure to our most important defender.
The capital's mayor said that Zelensky should have explained the reasons for the decision, which “shocked every Ukrainian.” In his opinion, many of his compatriots were shocked.
Klitschko said that during martial law, when there is a need for the unity of all political forces and citizens, unfortunately, there is political fighting. He said: Some politicians put their ambitions above the interests of the state.
On the issue of building opposition to President Zelensky, Klitschko admitted that this would be a grave mistake in the current situation. At the same time, he thought it would be wise for Zelensky to join forces again. “This will be the key to victory,” Klitschko said, adding that a national unity government should be formed for this purpose.
