- The new owner of the brewery in Leżajsk is a company called Hispaniolan
- It was created by companies that are part of Heineken Corporation and Mycofeast, which has so far been presented to the public as a “new investor”.
- The companies that will continue to own shares in the brewery on behalf of Heineken are Grupa Żywiec (the current owner of the brewery) and Beleggingsmaatschappij Limba, headquartered in Amsterdam.
- This information makes the whole process more mysterious

As we wrote on Tuesday in the text: When the euphoria subsided, doubts appeared in Legassec. “Who wants to buy our brewery and why?” A new investor has emerged who wants to resume production at the Leżajsk brewery, which was closed in August last year. The mayor of the municipality, Krzysztof Sobiejko, was the first to provide information on this matter (at the beginning of April). He reported that a buyer had emerged for the plant, the British company Mycofeast. However, the factory in Leżajsk has no plans to produce beer. According to what was reported to the mayor, its business plan assumes industrial fermentation of biomass to produce fats, proteins and additives for animal feed.
As we wrote in Onet, after the first wave of enthusiasm, Leżajsk residents began to wonder who would actually run the main plant in the region. Little is known about Mycofest. Its headquarters in Oxford, England, is actually a post office box, and the whole enterprise appears to have been recently set up specifically for the purpose of taking over a brewery in Podkarpacie.
sale? Documents submitted to the Competition and Consumer Bureau say something completely different
We were able to find out more details about the deal. In order for a brewery to change ownership, the Competition and Consumer Protection Bureau must approve the process. The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection has already published a note about the initiation of this procedure on its website, from which one can read that in the case of Leżajsk… it is difficult to talk about a typical sale.
The Competition and Consumer Bureau reports that it has been asked to approve the focus. It is also known that if the entire business process pays off, the brewery will not be managed by the company in the future Maykovest Only a limited liability company is called Hispaniola.
The co-owners of Hispaniolan are Mycofeast and two Heineken group companies, Grupa Żywiec (current owner of the plant in Leżajsk) and BV Beleggingsmaatschappij Limba. This means that the current owner of the factory – The Heineken Group will still own shares in it, although it is not known how much.
The UOKiK announcement also confirms Onet's previous findings, showing that Mycofeast is not the biomass fermentation giant, as was presented in the media at the beginning of April. This cannot be the case, Competition and Consumer Protection Bureau inspectors wrote “MFPL is a special purpose vehicle created for the purpose of executing the transaction and belongs to a (different – editor's note) capital group that carries out various activities for technology companies (including biotechnology) as well as advisory activities.”
Since the Żywiec Group announced in February 2023 that it would end production at its plant in Leżajsk and look for a buyer, several potential buyers have contacted Heineken's Polish subsidiary. According to our information, these companies are: Manufaktura Piwa, Wódki i Wina by Janusz Palikot, the Żabka department store chain, the German brewery Dortmunder Kronen, Anheuser-Busch InBev (an international company with beer brands in its portfolio: “Budweiser”, “Corona” and “Stella Artois” and Polish Milikowita.
However, all of these companies wanted to continue producing beer in Leżajsk (or did not rule out such a possibility). Their offers to buy the factory were not accepted. So it seems that in this case, Heineken decided that the best solution was to create a joint venture and keep the factory for itself, then shift its production to something other than beer.
Is this really the case? Onet asked Grupa Żywiec.
“As we reported in our position previously reported by the media, Grupa Żywiec is selling shares in the company that manages the assets of the brewery,” Magdalena Brzezinska, Director of Corporate Affairs at Grupa Żywiec, wrote in response to our questions. “Our minority stakes in this company will not affect in any way the operational activities conducted by Mycofeast at the plant in Leżajsk, which are significantly different from our business activities. However, we do not rule out cooperation in the future, hence this form of cooperation application “, Add.
