The idea of building an underwater tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar. The approximately 30-kilometre-long tunnel would connect Africa to Europe, thus creating a new alternative for travel in this region.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup has inspired authorities in Spain and Morocco to resume analyzes of the underwater tunnel project linking the two countries. They and Portugal will become World Cup organizers within six years, so it is not surprising that the authorities are already analyzing the potential number of fans and looking for solutions to improve transportation.
The idea of building a tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar first appeared in the late 1970s. Ambitious plans were put on hold due to the huge costs that the investment would have incurred.
The 28-kilometre-long underwater tunnel will be designated for rail transportation. The route will start in Punta Paloma, Spain and end near Tangier, Morocco. After the World Cup is over, it could help carry up to 12.8 million passengers a year.

The scale of the project is impressive. The estimated amount is also impressive – 10 billion euros. The Moroccan National Company for Exploration of the Strait began searching for sources of funding for the project.
But experts view the matter less optimistically. Even if the necessary funds could be provided for implementation, building an underwater tunnel would be a time-consuming process, and it is not known whether it can be completed by the time of the 2030 World Cup.
