The race was exciting, including: rain, which caused major problems for the drivers. Five riders did not reach the finish line, including Ferrari, Monaco’s Charles Leclerc, and Spain’s Carlos Sainz Jr.
Nothing interesting happened at first, although it was raining and the track was very slippery. Pole winner Russell retained the lead, followed by Verstappen. Both drivers, like most drivers, are wearing medium tyres, hoping the rain will stop soon. But this time the weather let the world champion down, and the rain fell more and more heavily, and the track was ruled by two drivers from the Haas team, the German Nico Hulkenberg and the Dane Kevin Magnussen.

They were the only ones in the entire group who had rain boots on their wheels and were the quickest for a few laps. Magnussen was fourth at one point, but when the track dried, the situation returned to normal. In the end, they both reached the finish line, placing eleventh and twelfth.
After just a few laps, the Ferrari drivers started having problems. Leclerc reported engine problems on lap eight, but the team initially ignored them. It later emerged that the power unit had lost power and the team withdrew Monaco from competition.
On lap 21, Norris, who accelerated strongly, overtook Verstappen, and after a while, Russell, and took the lead. His superiority over the world champion, who beat Russell, was growing rapidly. After three laps, the Briton was 10 seconds ahead of Verstappen.
The accident turned the tide of the race
After a few more laps, as the sun appeared, Logan Sargeant’s Williams crashed. The safety car appeared on the track, and Verstappen and Russell came to change tires, while Norris remained on the track. It was a mistake. The Briton also had worn tires and it was clear he would have to change them. Despite having a lead of more than 20 seconds over Verstappen, he returned to the track in third place.
The world champion was ahead, second-placed Russell was 2.5 seconds behind, and third-placed Norris was almost four seconds behind. Halfway through, after 35 laps, it started to rain again for a short period, but the situation at the front did not change. Only Leclerc definitely ended his Canadian adventure and withdrew.
Later, when the sun almost completely dried the track, most competitors put on so-called slicks. With his new tires, Verstappen returned to the track in second place, but when Norris did the same, the Dutchman took the lead again.
Carlosa Saienza drama!
Until the end of the race, the safety car came out again after Sainz collided with Taj Alexander Albon of the Williams team. After the start of the second half, Verstappen retained the lead, Norris came in second place, and Mercedes’ Russell and Hamilton competed for third place on the podium.
Verstappen, who is competing for the fourth consecutive world title in his career, is clearly ahead in the general classification of the world championships with 194 points. Leclerc is in second place – 138, and Norris is in third place – 131.
The next tenth round of the Formula 1 World Championship will be the Spanish Grand Prix on June 23.
