It has long been known that Friday, during the Nations League final tournament, would be the day Poland would not play. But that did not stop Polish fans from flocking to the stadium.
According to official data collected by the volleystation portal, there were 7,804 fans in the stands during the Italy-France match! By comparison, in the Ljubljana tournament that ended last week, there were several hundred spectators at matches in which the Slovenians did not play.
The fans’ enjoyment in the stands was fantastic. Marek Magera, who has been in charge of the matches during the volleyball tournaments for many years, made sure that every fan left the hall smiling.
As I walked into the stands of the Atlas Arena, two female fans holding a huge French flag caught my attention.
– We are fans of the French national team and of course Poland. We really wanted to be here and got the tickets at the last minute yesterday. But thanks to this, today we can watch the Tricolores, and then the Slovenians, whom we also love very much – they said.
In addition to the standard Mexican wave and the distinctive applause of volleyball performances, there was also a parody of the referee. The fans behind him did every move the referee showed.
The most important thing in all of this is that the fans gathered at the Atlas Stadium watched an excellent match. The confrontation between France and Italy lasted five sets, and the start of the second match was postponed on Friday. In the end, the Tricolor team won 3-2, and on Saturday, the 17th-placed team hosts Poland in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals.
But that’s not all. The broadcasters made sure that the players of both teams felt as good as possible on the pitch and the fans sang songs in their language, for example the famous Volare song. In other countries, such images are not common.
