Who needs lithium? These batteries don’t

Sodium-ion batteries could allow energy to be stored at a lower cost and with less negative impact on the environment.

Such batteries could be particularly useful in the automotive industry. The growing popularity of electric cars means that demand for batteries is very high. Unfortunately, while lithium-ion batteries offer high efficiency, they are also prone to failure and their production is relatively expensive. Cheaper, safer alternatives, which may have a less negative impact on the environment, will certainly be more expensive.
