The tragedy occurred two years ago in Barsenhausen, Germany.Ewa B. was driving a dark blue Audi A6 at 180 km/h. on a road with a speed limit of 70 km/h. Her dangerous driving led to an accident that killed two children – aged 2 and 6 – who were travelling in a Nissan Qashqai. Their parents miraculously survived.
The woman faces life in prison.
What makes this trial unique is the fact that Ewa B. is charged not only with causing the accident, but with murder. Prosecutors say the woman used her car as a “public hazard,” taking the lives of innocent people. She faces life in prison.
Ewa B. is not the only defendant in this case. The other defendant is a 40-year-old salesman named Marco S., who was driving a SEAT Cupra Formentor, the car that Ewa B. tried to overtake just before the accident. The man is accused of crimes because he did not want to be overtaken, which turned into a 700-meter street race, and faces up to 10 years in prison.
She was in a hurry to get to her children.
Ewa B. denies the charges, claiming she did not intend to kill anyone and was in a hurry to get to her children. However, witnesses from her work say she often exceeded the speed limit and overtook several vehicles at the same time.
This is the second trial in this tragedy. Previously, the District Court in Hanover sentenced Ewa B. to six years in prison and Marco S. to four years in prison. However, the verdict was overturned after an appeal by the public prosecutor’s office and the convicts, so the trial was resumed.
This trial could make a major step forward in dealing with speeding on the roads, and treating it not only as a traffic violation, but also as a potential murder.
