The stewards of the Formula 1 race at Spa-Francorchamps confirmed George Russell’s disqualification. So victory went to Lewis Hamilton.
The reason for this penalty for Mercedes is the failure to pass the technical inspection, where it was discovered that after pumping fuel, the car number 63 was found to be 1.5 kg underweight. Since the technical regulations in Formula 1 require the car to comply with the regulations throughout the entire competition, the standard penalty is the most painful, i.e. disqualification.
After a short analysis, the judges simply did their job and issued this verdict. Since the calibration of the weighing equipment was checked in the presence of a team member, the Silver Arrows had no way to defend themselves. Of course, arguments about not gaining an advantage, even if the infraction was as minimal as possible, would not affect the decision.
The change in the Belgian Grand Prix results will see all other drivers jump one place. The podium will consist of Lewis Hamilton, Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc. Daniel Ricciardo, who finished 11th, will make it into the top ten.
Mercedes will suffer a huge loss in the team’s standings – instead of scoring 43 points, they will add 25 and will clearly not be the best-scoring team this weekend. McLaren will gain more, with a total of 28 points.
Regardless, Sergio Perez will remain in seventh place in the individual classification. Checo lost that position today, but a mistake from his rivals will put him back a little higher.
If it weren’t for the team’s mistake, Russell would have been just two points behind Hamilton, and he’s now 34 points behind his teammate. For the seven-time world champion, it’s the 105th win of his career. Interestingly, in October 2023, he was the only one left. He was excluded from the US Grand Prix results.but then missed P2.
