We’ve had the same series for the third year in a row, but maybe we’re tired of it…
Problems registering players. Weird transfer window. Constant institutional crisis. You have to constantly try to build the first team.
Given what’s happening, can a Barcelona fan be optimistic about the new season?
A positive sign is that a star has finally emerged to attract people to the televisions and to the stadium. I am of course referring to Lamine Yamal. He had a great performance at Euro 2024. We can also be happy to see Gavi and Pedri back in the game soon. These will be the transfers that are needed.
Fans would like Neco Williams to also make an appearance at Barcelona, but that doesn’t seem likely. Dani Olmo was a backup option. I have mixed feelings about him. I appreciate him a lot as a player, but I don’t think he is a first-choice transfer for Barcelona. It would be essential to get someone on either side of the defence or to help, not another half-midfielder and half-forward. There are already a few of those players at Barcelona.
Casual fans might wonder what all this is about. The whole summer has been filled with reports of a move for Neco Williams, who reportedly has a release clause of €58m, while the club is having trouble registering players in the starting line-up.
It is known that this is related to the club’s financial situation. Barcelona will have a hard time getting back on track for a long time.
The big problem is, among other things, the fact that Barcelona is constantly building a new Camp Nou. It now plays at the Olympic Stadium, which does not attract even half the number of people that attend the old facility. The team plays away all the time. There is no home advantage. This is not a stadium that works as a cauldron that can attract fans away. No wonder Barcelona scored more points away from home last season than at home for a long time.
In addition, there is no regular marketing because you will not be running the store on match day. This also affects the financial results of the club.

Did Laporta contact Dani Olmo to calm the fans after the failure with Nico Williams?
It reminds me of the situation during Laporta’s first term. It was supposed to be David Beckham, but it didn’t work out and the fans had to be comforted by something. Ronaldinho arrived, which is good for Barcelona.
Now that’s the wrong metric. Neither is Nico Williams Beckham, let alone Dani Olmo Ronaldinho. Sure he can play football, but suddenly there’s a surplus of players who play like that at Barcelona.
Ferran Torres, Rafinha and Dani Olmo are not wingers, midfielders or strikers. These are players who play around the perimeter of the penalty area. Pedri and Fermin Lopez also play like that. These are players who score goals, but they will not reach double figures in a season.
Barcelona need a player who can score goals consistently and who will relieve Lewandowski. None of us knows what this season will look like for Robert. Barcelona will rely on him in the penalty area. The same problem as last season may reappear: no Lewy or Lewy out of shape and no one to score goals.
Can Bao Victor solve these problems?
He has shown himself very well during the pre-season. In the hierarchy of attackers, he has surpassed both Vitor Roque and Ansu Fati, who will probably also have to leave the club. It is still symbolic for me that a footballer who does not actually play wears the number 10 shirt at Barcelona.
But can a player whose signing costs as much as Lewandowski’s monthly salary be a major figure?
This is partly a consequence of Marc Jurado’s departure to Chelsea. Barcelona needed a striker who could be a strong link in the reserve team and also get minutes in the first team. But this is not the kind of transfer that a club that is supposed to be fighting for titles is talking about.
And on?
There are some positive signs before the season, but not enough to think about the Spanish championship. The team is still not balanced enough to compete on an equal footing with Real Madrid. This is already an established product that is constantly evolving. So winning anything this season would be a success for Barcelona.
The glimmer of hope is that the coach is a man who knows things like pressure. That was evident in pre-season matches.
Except for the match against AS Monaco.
The Gamper Cup has its own peculiarities. It often includes players who will not be able to count on regular play. Goals are conceded due to individual errors.
Of course, it is difficult to draw far-reaching conclusions after the pre-season matches, but in the end it is clear that Barcelona are pressing. This obviously still needs work, but there is a certain degree of optimism that the new coach’s assumptions are more in line with modern football than they have been in the past few seasons. I am not accusing Xavi of anything here, because he operated in very specific circumstances. Flick has had time to prepare for the work with Barcelona, so now we have to wait for it to bear fruit.
How do you see Lewandowski’s role in Flick’s puzzle? He won’t press much, and in these pre-season matches we saw that he often went below the halfway line and distributed the attacks. But with this solution he is absent from the penalty area and the circle closes.
That’s what I’m afraid of too. It was the same with Xavi. When Llull was 40 metres from goal, the ball went to the wing, and he had no one to play the ball in the ’16’ area. So the action was withdrawn and had to be continued from the middle of the pitch. Playing at second, third or fourth speed even gave Barça fans a toothache. There was no first ball play there, as in Messi’s time, just slow passes.
I think it will be tighter with Flick. The whole team will attack, as was the case at times in pre-season, and the whole team will also defend more. No one will be exempt from this obligation.
But will Lewandowski still be able to play like this?
I think Flick will not make dust here and Lewy will have a similar job as at Bayern. Although it is known that it is not about intensity and teammates who play differently, because at Barcelona there is no player like Thomas Müller.
I have no doubt that Lewy’s biological age is much younger. We all know his work ethic. That’s not the case with Neymar, who will have drinks on holiday and return to the club several kilos overweight. Lewy likes to be in good physical shape.
It is known that it has its limits. But that does not mean that it will suddenly stop accelerating, fighting and stalling. In my opinion, there will not be much difference between this season and last season. Flick will probably put him on the pitch better than Xavi because he knows him better. And that could lead to a better season than the previous one.
However, there is no denying that a large part of Barcelona fans would prefer him to leave after the season. But it seems that his contract will be automatically extended (according to the Spanish media, Lewandowski must play at least 45 minutes in 55% of matches for his contract to be extended itself – editor’s note).
He has a well-signed contract. Pini Zahavi took good care of it. This is also my accusation against the Barcelona authorities that the contract is better taken care of by the players’ agents than by the club.
Do you support Lewandowski playing for Barcelona in the 2025/2026 season?
I will count on his appearance in this competition. Not only in terms of goals and assists, but also in terms of what he will contribute to the team. If he has a successful competition I will leave him. Also because there are no nine figures on the market that are within Barcelona’s reach.
Perhaps no one at the club has thought of bringing in a serious competitor for Lewandowski. Alexander Söhrloth is likely to be within reach. Meanwhile, the previous season’s vice-top scorer has gone to Atletico Madrid.
Maybe Barcelona can afford him. It would be a more profitable transfer than Olmo. Of course Dani is a better player than the Norwegian, but Barcelona would currently benefit more from a number 9 who would be able to relieve Lewandowski.
