In the first match of the direct battle for promotion to the group stage, Lille played Slavia Prague, and this time we did not see Tomasz Leskiewicz and Bartosz Frankowski alongside Marciniak.
What’s the reason behind this? It was only in the 18th minute that we saw the discussion between the players and the referee, when Thomas Meunier hit his opponent with great force, knocking him down and receiving a yellow card. The Belgian protested, but you have to admit that he was wrong – he simply deserved a reprimand for this move.
It looked similar not long after when Marciniak interrupted Slavia’s actions when Lukas Masopust was in a good position. However, the Pole had blown the whistle just before that, noticing a foul on Benjamin Andrej.
That day we saw many unpleasant encounters, and Marciniak clearly cared about the health of the players. The Pole stopped the game and called Slavia’s medical staff even when one of the visiting players was hit hard in the back by the ball. Then he needed help, and the 43-year-old responded quickly.
One of his last decisions in the first half can be assessed in a similar way – Masopust made a sharp foul on Remy Cabella, Marciniak left the game and allowed Lille players to shoot the ball, and only after that he gave the Czech a yellow card.
Only in extra time was the Pole’s luck really bad. Lille launched a counterattack and one of their players tried to stimulate the game by playing on the right side but he injured Marciniak. Again everything went according to protocol and the game was restarted with a jump ball.
Slavia Prague had two goals ruled out by Szymon Marciniak. And he was right.
One gets the impression that Marciniak quickly laid down the rules of this match and that the players knew what to expect from him. When Capel went down in the opposition penalty area early in the second half, his complaints about the lack of a starting lineup lasted literally a second.
But there was no shortage of complaints in the 63rd minute of the match, when Slavia had a goal disallowed. But these matters did not matter, because the Pole showed his expert eye and noticed a handball by El Hadji Malek Diouf. His account was later confirmed by Tomasz Kwiatkowski and Paweł Malec, who were watching the replay. And it all took literally an instant. And that was when his work impressed me even more.
The situation was repeated 10 minutes from time. Mojmir Chytil then scored but was offside and Marciniak again ruled out the visitors’ goal. Right again. The hosts won 2-0.
The situation with the judge’s work is quite clear – one mistake is enough to make him famous. However, when the referee has a good game, he is not mentioned. This time, it is difficult to find any mention of Szymon Marciniak on social media. This shows perfectly how he treated himself.
