Children’s units in Silesia explode at the seams with RSV. In the Bielsko-Biała hospital, there are more patients than beds. Likewise in Chorzów

Children’s wards in governorate hospitals. Silesia explodes at the seams. It’s all because of the RSV virus, which causes respiratory infections and is especially dangerous among young patients. This year he announced himself earlier than usual and is particularly annoying. All beds are occupied in the intensive care and pediatric units of the municipal hospital complex in Chorzov. In Bielsko-Biała, in the children’s ward, extra beds had to be added. The facilities at Gliwice and Katowice also house a full range of patients.

Hospitals are slowly starting to run out of places for the youngest patients. More and more children are being admitted to emergency departments with symptoms indicating upper or lower respiratory tract bleeding and RSV infection. The most common are infants and newborns.

During school and preschool children, viral infections cause upper respiratory infections, and in younger children can turn into bronchiolitis or pneumonia. It is especially dangerous for premature babies, whose treatment must be in a hospital in the neonatal intensive care unit. It concerns the respiratory system that is not fully developed and the immune system immature.

The infant ward of the Children’s Hospital in Bielsko-Biała, where patients go up to three years old, is already overcrowded. After young patients occupied all 24 beds, the management decided to add five more beds.
