Eight of the 2021’s top players qualified for the WTA Finals, but world ranking leader Asli Partey, who decided to rest and begin preparations for the new season of the WTA Tour, quit. Its place was taken by Estonian Annette Kontaveit.
Before the tournament started, the group stage was a draw. The eight tennis players were divided into two groups (called “chichen Itza” and “teotihuacan”) of four players. Each participant in the tournament will play three matches in a group, and only the best tennis players in each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
Iga Świątek went to the group where he will face Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari and Paula Badosa. The Polish women will play three matches that will decide whether they will be able to advance to the next stage. Swiatek certainly won’t be the favorite to win the tournament.
The competition will begin in Guadalajara on November 10 and run until November 17.
