A border guard machine from Gdansk was intercepted by a Russian fighter over the Black Sea.  The crew is safe, the accident is under investigation

A border guard plane stationed in Gdańsk Rębiechowo was intercepted on a daily basis by a Russian fighter over the Black Sea. Gdańsk Turbolet SG is participating in a joint patrol mission of the Romanian Border Services and the European Frontex Agency. The machine landed safely in Romania and no one was hurt. NATO fighters were put on guard. The Romanian authorities are in contact with the Polish government and the Agency to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

A Polish Border Guard L410 Turbolet was intercepted by a Russian Sukhoi Su-35 fighter on Friday, May 5, around 1:20 p.m. over the Black Sea. This is one of two such machines that have been serving in the Border Guard since 2020 and are stationed daily at the service’s air base in Gdańsk-Röbecsaw. The Romanian Ministry of National Defense announced the incident on Saturday evening. The Polish machine, in cooperation with the Romanian border guards, carried out routine patrol missions under the auspices of Frontex in international airspace. The accident occurred about 60 km east of Romanian airspace.

The Romanian ministry said in a statement that “the aggressive and dangerous maneuvers that the combat aircraft of the Russian Federation repeatedly carried out near the Polish plane caused a high level of turbulence and great difficulties in controlling it.”

As a result of the incident, two Romanian Air Force planes and two Spanish Air Force fighter planes on air police combat duty were initially alerted by the NATO Joint Air Operations Center in Torrejon.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that the Polish plane’s crew “behaved calmly and professionally in a situation irresponsibly created by the Russian pilot. The plane managed to straighten its flight path after the initial loss of altitude due to the maneuvers of the Su-35 and landed safely at Mihail Kogălniceanu Airport around 13:50. It did not One of the crew members of the Polish plane was injured as a result of this accident.

The Romanian authorities are in contact with Frontex and the Polish authorities to clarify all the circumstances of this incident. The aggressive behavior of a military aircraft of the Russian Federation against an unarmed aircraft carrying out the Frontex mission to monitor migration risks in the Black Sea basin is completely unacceptable. This incident is another proof of the provocative position of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea, ”said the statement of the Ministry of National Defense of Romania.

The L410 UVP-E20 Turbolet will remain at the Border Guard Base in Gdańsk, Romania from April 19 to May 17 as part of the Multipurpose Maritime Operation (MMO) Western Black Sea 2023, coordinated by the European Border Police and Coast Guard Agency – Frontex.

MMO Western Black Sea 2023 is a joint operation led by Romania and coordinated by Frontex. Poland, Spain and Sweden are also involved in the process, as well as two EU agencies: the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA). The operation, scheduled for mid-December, aims to prevent illegal immigration, illegal fishing, marine pollution and other types of transnational crime in the Black Sea region. Western Black Sea MMO has been conducted annually since 2019.
