A unique phenomenon in the night sky. “Together they will be eye-catching as hell.”

Tonight there will be a conjunction between Mars and Jupiter. Both planets will be very close to each other in the sky. According to the famous astronomer, Karol Wojcicki, this phenomenon will be visible even in large cities.

As Carol Wojcicki, an astronomy publisher and author of the blog With Your Head in the Stars, said on social media, the closest approach of Mars and Jupiter, a conjunction, will occur in the sky next night.

“The planets will appear above the northeastern horizon around 1 a.m., and will be just 21 arc minutes apart, less than the diameter of the full Moon,” he wrote. “Because of their brightness and proximity, the planetary pair will be quite spectacular! You will see them under a dark sky and in the middle of a large city,” Wójcicki added. But he noted that the planets will initially be very low above the horizon, which could lead to them being obscured by buildings or trees. At around 3 a.m., Mars and Jupiter should be 25 degrees above the horizon.

Mars and Jupiter in the night sky. “Together they would be eye-catching as hell.”

“Jupiter will shine at a brightness of -2.2 (magnitude – ed.). Mars will reach +0.8 that night. Together they will be eye-catching as hell, so you will see them simply from everywhere: from the city, from the countryside, from the sea, from the mountains,” wrote on social media.

As Wojcicki acknowledges, such a conjunction is only an apparent closeness. “From Earth’s perspective, the two planets will be in the same line of sight, but in reality there will be a great distance between them: Mars will be 228.3 million kilometers from Earth, and Jupiter will be 802.8 million kilometers away.”

This isn’t the only attraction in the sky you’ll be able to see. Although the maximum of the Perseid meteor shower is already past us, there are still plenty of “shooting stars” to be had.

What about the weather?

In most parts of the country, weather conditions should be favorable for night observations. The weather will be clear at night, but there will be more cumulus clouds in the west and south of the country.
