A “very, very large” check

Legendary guitarist Kenneth “KK” Downing, an iconic figure in Judas Priest’s early days, made his position clear on his return to the group, insisting that only a substantial financial incentive would convince him to return. Downing, now 72, hasn’t performed with Judas Priest since 2011 and finds himself estranged from the band.

During an interview with German media WDR during the Rock Hard Festival, Downing revealed his conditions for a possible reformation. He jokingly announced: “Okay, I’ll see the check. It must be very, very high. No. I am happy. I am happy. I politely approached those guys a few years ago and said, ‘Look, what do you think about me coming back? You plan to do things as a group of four. To that they said, ‘No’. That’s it. This is the end, I think – it’s sad.

Although not an actual founding member of Judas Priest, Downing’s influence on the group is undeniable. He joined the lineup and participated in their first album, continuing to contribute to every album until Nostradamus in 2008. His legacy within the group is that he is often mistaken for a founding member.

Currently, Downing is focusing on his new venture KK’s Priest, which features former members of Judas Priest and is touring. KK’s pastor is preparing to embark on an extensive European tour, followed by dates in North America.
