“Bloody Moon”: Martin Scorsese didn’t want to talk about white men
Martin Scorsese’s latest film is an adaptation of David Grann’s book, published in Poland, entitled “The Time of the Blood Moon. The Murders of the Osage Indians and the Birth of the FBI. The author describes a series of mysterious murders and deaths among members of the tribe who owned oil-rich areas. He also describes the background of the investigation that was ordered By Edgar Hoover In this case, initially, Scorsese and Eric Roth, co-writer of the screenplay, wanted to tell the story from the point of view of Tom White, the agent in charge of the investigation, and they planned to assign this role to Leonardo DiCaprio.
At some point I realized I was making a film only about white men. This means that I approached the topic from the outside, which worried me a lot – said the manager.
Scorsese and Roth then decided to rewrite the script, changing the perspective from which the story would be told. The remake focused on another hero – Ernest Burckhardt, a World War I veteran who, through marriage to Molly (Lily Gladstone), a member of the Osage tribe, gained the right to dispose of her property. The role of Ernest eventually went to DiCaprio, and Tom White – turned supporting character – was played by Jesse Plemons.
Lily Gladstone was happy with the changes. In an interview with Vulture, the actress said that after making changes to the script for “The Bloody Moon,” It is not a white savior story. It’s the story of the Osage saying, “Do something. This is money. Come and help us.”
