Box Office: Reynolds, Lively Have Barbenheimer
American media write that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds repeated last year’s so-called “Barbenheimer” phenomenon: the acting couple managed to conquer cinemas almost simultaneously – and with two completely different films. “Deadpool & Wolverine” starring Reynolds remained at the top of the American box office, but this weekend the first drama film “It Ends with Us” starring Lively became a huge hit.

Deadpool and Wolverine have already made $1 billion.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” crossed another box office milestone on Saturday: The Marvel Studios offering has already grossed more than $1 billion. It is the 31st Disney film and the 11th Marvel film to achieve this feat.

The film has already grossed PLN 494.3 million in the US and PLN 535.1 million worldwide. This is the second production this year – after “Inside Out 2” – to cross the $1 billion mark. Soon, “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($1.029 billion) will become the world’s highest-grossing R-rated film, surpassing “Joker” ($1.078 billion).

Taking second place at the US box office this weekend is Justin Baldoni’s drama “It Ends with Us” starring Blake Lively.
Prior to its premiere, the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling book was expected to gross between $23 million and $50 million. However, the film exceeded all expectations, reaching 50 million in the United States. After adding 30 million screenings around the world, the production has already reached 80 million.

The duo of “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “It Ends With Us” contributed 35% more to this weekend’s box office than the same weekend last year, and 19% more than the same weekend in 2019, the last weekend before the pandemic.

The dual success of the two films is largely influenced by the fact that Reynolds and Lively are a couple and support each other in promoting both films. The last time a married couple topped the U.S. box office with two films was 34 years ago, in 1990. Bruce Willis won for “Die Hard 2”, and Demi Moore for “Die Hard” came in second.

Third place in the weekend ranking in the United States went to “Twisters”. The disaster spectacle earned an additional $ 15.4 million in American theaters. In total, it already has $ 222 million (in the United States) and $ 310 million (worldwide).

The loser of the weekend was Borderlands.Which ranked fourth at the American box office. The video game adaptation, directed by Elijo Roth and starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart, grossed just $8.8 million in its opening weekend. With a budget of $110-120 million, this is a clear failure.

Also making its U.S. debut this weekend is Tilman Singer’s horror film “Cuckoo,” starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens. The Neon Studios production, which cost $7 million to make, took in $3 million in theaters.
