Dark Avenger – Why Was The Penguin’s Gender Changed? Series Creator Explains His Decision

Before the premiere Batman: The Dark Avenger Information has surfaced on the Internet that the gender of one of the villains in the Amazon Prime Video series will be changed. It turns out that instead of Penguin in this interpretation of the Dark Knight story, it will be Oswald Cobblepot, who had the opportunity to appear in the first episode. Some Batman fans began to criticize the creators’ decision, and now, after the premiere of the new animated series, Bruce Timmwho was also responsible for creating the 1992 Batman film, spoke about the reasons behind his decision.

Batman: The Dark Avenger – Reasons for Penguin’s Gender Change

The producer admitted that he realized early in the production of Batman: The Dark Avenger that there weren’t enough good villains in the universe:

James Tucker and I were talking about the outline of the show and we said, “One of the problems with Batman is that there are no good female villains.” There’s Catwoman, there’s Poison Ivy, there’s Harley Quinn. So it would be really nice to have more female antagonists. Then I thought, “What if we changed the Penguin’s gender?”

Tucker loved the idea and set out to create a female version of the penguin:

When he said, “Maybe we could change the gender of the penguin,” I immediately had a lot of ideas. I thought of Marlene Dietrich in a tuxedo and in Cabaret — that was enough for me to start drawing her. I was also thinking a little bit about Harvey Fierstein, Hairspray, and Divine from Pink Flamingos. I knew right away what this character was supposed to be.

Batman: Caped Crusader – What’s the deal?

The official description of the plot reads:

In the fires of tragedy, wealthy Bruce Wayne becomes more and less of a man—Batman. His one-man crusade for justice attracts unlikely allies from the GCPD and City Council, but his heroic actions have deadly and unexpected consequences.

The series features the voices of Hamish Linklater as Batman, Jamie Chung as Harley Quinn, Christina Ricci as Catwoman, and Diedrich Bader as Two-Face. The cast includes Mckenna Grace, David Krumholtz, Haley Joel Osment, Minnie Driver, Toby Stephens, Reid Scott, Dan Donohue, Gary Anthony Williams, Jason Watkins, John DiMaggio, Crystal Joy Brown, Michelle C.
