Depopulation in Poland. We are at the top of the infamous Eurostat ranking

After declines in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the population of the European Union increased for the second year in a row, but not in the case of Poland, according to the latest Eurostat data. We recorded the largest population decline among all member states.

“The population of the European Union, after declines in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, rose for the second year in a row from 447.6 million on 1 January 2023 to 449.2 million on 1 January 2024,” Eurostat said.

As the European Statistical Office explains, The negative natural increase stopped with the positive migration balance. The significant population increase was due to post-pandemic migration movements, as well as the influx of refugees from Ukraine who received temporary protection in EU countries.

“Taking into account the longer time frame, the population of the European Union increased from 354.5 million in 1960 to 449.2 million on 1 January 2024, an increase of 94.7 million people. However, the population growth rate has gradually slowed in recent decades: the population of the European Union grew on average by about 0.6 million people per year in the years 2015-2024, while the average increase in the 1960s was 2.9 million people per year,” the office adds in its latest report.

Population of the European Union countries as of 1 January this year. It ranged from 0.6 million in Malta to 83.4 million in Germany. Despite the population growth in the European Union, many countries have seen a significant decline in population.

Depopulation in Poland

Eurostat drew attention to the significant decline in the population of our country. Poland was among the countries with the largest population decline. Over the past year.

“The total population decline in the period from January 1, 2023 to January 1, 2024 was recorded in 7 countries, with the largest declines recorded in Poland (-132,800 people), Greece (-16,800) and Hungary (-15,100),” the office said.

As ING analysts noted on the X portal, with the population increasingly declining: “GDP growth is increasingly dependent on efficiency.”

However, increases were observed in the remaining twenty countries, with the largest increases. Spain (525,100), Germany (330,000) and France (229,000).
