Soon Yevgeny Klimov found himself on the list of sports disgraces and with his views, in which he unscrupulously supported the policy of Vladimir Putin, ruined his chances of getting a place in the World Cup. The 29-year-old appeared during a pro-war rally in Luzhniki, Moscow, wearing a jacket bearing the distinctive letter “Z”, which has become a symbol of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And this wasn’t the first time he had caused a stir with his behaviour.
Commentators have expressed their clear opposition to the Russians. Someone caused a storm with his gesture
Climo’s stance became tumultuous during the competitions in Lahti. After the start of the conquest of Ukraine, many activists demanded the expulsion of Russian ski jumpers not only from the competition held in Finland, but also from the entire competition at the World Cup.
In the end, this did not happen, and Eurosport commentators – Igor Pachot and Jacob Petchatovsky expressed their opposition in a very firm manner. The exploits of Klimov and Alexander Bazhenov, Mikhail Nazarov and Roman Trofimov were accompanied by horrified silence, and sometimes the commentators discussed completely different topics.
This decision was made by the station’s authorities, who were informed of it before the broadcast began on social media.
“As a gesture of solidarity with Ukraine, the jumps of Russian athletes during the competitions in Lahti will not be commented on,” the station said on Twitter.
TVP Sport also decided to take a similar step in the context of Russian athletes, interrupting broadcasts while fighting one of them during Friday’s ONE Championship: Full Circle gala.
“TVP Sport opposes the participation of Russian representatives in all sports competitions. That is why we do not show their fights,” – this message appeared on television.
This Russian gesture caused a scandal. The FIS had no choice
When the entire sports world unequivocally called for the exclusion of Russian athletes from international competitions, fuel was added to the fire by … Klimov, who allowed himself to wave his glove provocatively in front of the camera during the team competition in Lahti. There would be nothing strange about it, if not for the fact that there is a Russian flag on it.
This was the nail in the coffin, FIS did not intend to pick and choose and soon after made the only correct decision, closing the way for Russian players to compete in the elite. Al-Ittihad also maintained its position for the 2022/2023 season, which makes the Russians disappear permanently from the radars of Polish fans.
Klimov and other Russian jumpers still compete, but only … at the Russian Cup. There is no longer a place for them in the World Cup and it remains to be hoped that the FIS will not open the gate to return to the elite for a long time. Because no one misses them.
A special gesture for Camille Stoche
In Lahti, ski jumpers have tried to support Ukrainians and show many signs of solidarity with our eastern neighbors who have been struggling with the brutality of Vladimir Putin’s forces for a year.
Our three-time Olympic champion had a letter in English written on his skis. Her message was: “Stop the war! It’s better to fight in sport.”
“It also cost me some stress and nerves. Since we came here, I’ve been thinking about what’s happening all the time. I can’t escape from it. I stopped using the phone and the internet, because all the time I only watched the events that were taking place in Ukraine. It touched me deeply.” And it shook me deeply. I wanted to show that as athletes we can’t pretend nothing happened. I didn’t feel good during the competition. I love jumping, but the competition itself didn’t satisfy me. Whatever was going on in my mind was controlling me. I can’t turn my back on that, and I don’t think We have to talk about it loudly and, above all, promote what is most important in sport, that is, good relations and mutual respect,” Stoch said in front of the Eurosport cameras.
