Italian luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana has reportedly launched a brand new perfume for the first time for canine audiences: a product that won’t be the rage among vets.
“Inspired by Domenico Dolce’s unconditional love for his faithful dog Fef, this alcohol-free fragrance mist for dogs combines fresh and delicate notes […] It’s a soft and frosty fragrance designed for a playful beauty routine,” the luxury company’s website read, as reported by Sky News on Monday.
The Fefe bottle, decorated with a 24-carat gold-plated foot print, will retail for 99 euros – or nearly $150 Canadian – per bottle.
But if the product is “safe for pets” and “approved by veterinarians,” some of them would have come to the media to question the latter claim.
According to Federico Goscia, an Italian veterinarian with a doctorate at the University of Teramo, a dog’s natural sense of smell can help diagnose a condition, he told The Associated Press, ABC News reported.
“For example, in the case of sebaceous dermatitis, the smell somehow completes the diagnosis. The smell of breath, the smell of earwax is masked by perfume. So it can be a problem even for us vets,” continued the expert from Rome.
This type of scent can interfere with a dog’s sense of smell, which uses its nose to specifically identify humans and other canines, he said.
“When the dog comes, he looks at you, wags his tail, but first he smells you, then he recognizes you, because you are stored in one of his “scent drawers”. So, this smell should not change the world,” he told the press company.
On the contrary, dog breeders would have responded well to the introduction of this new luxury product.
“Our dogs live with us, so a small dog on the sofa next to us is always nice,” says Aliof Rilova Dano, a dog groomer at Morgana Carpentieri’s La Boutique delle Birbe salon in Rome. Associated Press.
