Donald Trump's opponents throw him a lifeline. The moment was not accidental

If even a small group of voters turns away from Trump, the former president could lose in a November clash with Joe Biden. This is not what the Trump team wants, but neither does the rest of the Republican Party.

The former president’s current rivals within the party may not have liked Trump or thought that Nikki Haley, for example, would better represent Republicans, but in the end they were faced with a fait accompli and a simple choice: Donald Trump or Joe Biden. Trilithium non-datur.

Therefore, it is no coincidence that a few days before the end of the trial in New York, Nikki Haley, who was Trump’s last “obstacle” to the party’s nomination, announced her support for the former president. On Friday, a similar decision was made by influential GOP donor and Blackstone Chairman Stephen Schwarzman, who donated generously to Trump’s 2020 campaign but distanced himself from him after the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Both Haley during the primary campaign and Schwarzman in recent years claimed that they did not want Trump in the White House. What has changed?

As a voter, I am betting on a president who will hold our enemies accountable, support our allies, and secure our borders. Trump was not perfect. I’ve said that many times. But Biden turned out to be a disaster. “This is why I will vote for Trump,” Haley said recently.

“I share most Americans’ concerns that our economic, immigration, and foreign policy are taking the country in the wrong direction. For these reasons, I intend to vote for change and support Donald Trump for president,” Schwarzman said in a statement.

Both Healey and Schwarzman (as well as many of the wealthy donors who would follow the Blackstone CEO) are choosing Trump because they fundamentally disagree with Biden’s policies. They believe this leads to increased inflation, an uncontrolled flow of migrants, and hesitation towards the war in the Gaza Strip.

Trump may be a stranger to them as a person, but not necessarily as a politician. They don’t have to like it to notice the similarities in the show. So they hope Trump will cut taxes, or at least not raise them, for the wealthiest, and solve the immigration problem at the southern border.

The Republican establishment, which has so far distanced itself from Trump, not only fears Biden’s re-election, but also fears that a potential conviction will discourage some voters from voting for the former president. This, in turn, will postpone the implementation of their political program for a few more years.

That’s why, now, even before the court ruling, Haley and Schwarzman are stepping in in advance, rallying around Trump and wanting to provide him with adequate funding so he can run the most effective campaign possible.

Faced with the dilemma of whether to deprive themselves of even the slightest possibility of influencing federal power over the next four years or to reach a moral compromise with Donald Trump, they choose the latter.
