“Dune: Part 2” with optimistic expectations
In the United States, the film will be released in theaters on March 1. On Thursday, Deadline published a text by Anthony D'Alessandro, which analyzes the first and most conservative estimates of the blockbuster's expected results on its opening weekend.
“Three weeks before it was released in cinemas, everyone started going crazy about this show,” the journalist writes. And forecasts of financial results at the beginning of this film are very optimistic, because they indicate that Villeneuve's latest project can earn only $65 million in the North American market (USA and Canada). “This means it will be 59-83 percent higher than the opening tally of 'Dune' in 2021 ($45 million),” D'Alessandro points out.
According to an expert who analyzes the box office, “It will be a great debut in a dying environment.” It is clear that when comparing the results year after year – in the period 1/01-04/02. This year’s result is 13%. Worse than 2023. D'Alessandro also wrote that there are those who believe “Dune: Part Two” will earn $75 million to $80 million in the domestic market during its opening weekend.
Oscar success for “Dune”
Dune is one of the most famous science fiction novels of all time. The book, written by Frank Herbert, has sold more than 20 million copies. In 1984, an adaptation of the film “Dune” filmed by David Lynch and starring Kyle MacLachlan, Virginia Madsen and Francesca Annis was released.
Denis Villeneuve — creator of such classics as “The Cinder,” “Sicario,” “A New Beginning” and “Blade Runner 2049” — in 2021 made “Dune,” which was an adaptation of the first volume of Herbert’s novel. As he explained at the time, he focused on this part, waiting for the reactions that the film would provoke. The cast includes: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling and Javier Bardem. The second part will also include: Christopher Walken, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Léa Seydoux.
So far, Villeneuve's film “Dune” has grossed more than $400 million. He has been honored with nearly 300 nominations and 173 awards. Out of ten Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) for 2022, the Motion Picture Academy ranked the film in six categories: Best Score, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Set Design, and Best Special Effects.
Villeneuve: The second part will be more powerful
In a recent interview with Total Film magazine, Villeneuve confirmed that the second part of “Dune” is “more powerful.” The first part was more contemplative and contemplative. We followed a young man discovering a new planet and a new culture – Villeneuve explained in Total Film. He added – Part Two… is primarily an action movie.
“Variety” points out that the fact that the second part was filmed entirely using IMAX cameras allows us to doubt that it will be an action movie.
In a recent interview with “The Empire,” the director expressed his hope that the third part of “Dune” could be produced. -If I could create a trilogy, it would be a dream come true – he admitted. He revealed that the potential third part is already taking the form of “words on paper.” If a “Dune” sequel is made, the screenplay will be based on the novel “Dune Messiah” by Herbert, a direct literary continuation of “Dune.”
