Luis Enrique will soon retire as coach of the Spanish national team. Cadena SER claims that the local federation has already chosen its successor.
The Spaniards started the World Cup by beating Costa Rica 7-0, but in each subsequent match they played worse. The tournament ended in 1/8 finals. They were eliminated by Morocco after an embarrassing penalty shootout in which they failed to convert any penalties.
Cadena SER claims that Enrique’s fate is sealed. The 52-year-old had already turned down an offer to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the year, a few months ago. Now no one will offer him a new contract. His departure is expected to be announced in the coming days.
He will succeed Enrique Luis de la Fuente, who has been managing Spain’s youth and youth teams for years. In 2019, he led his team to a silver medal at the European Under-21 Championship. Two years later, his players became Olympic runners-up in Tokyo. He has little experience driving seniors. In the past, he coached the reserves of Athletic Bilbao and Alaves. He has never worked in the Spanish league.
– It has evolved a lot. He has worked with most of the current national team players. The dressing room will be pleased with his choice – said Anton Mina on the “Arguero” program.
Among other coaches who could take over the team, Marcelino is mentioned. However, his chances seem slim.
Enrique has been in charge of the national team on and off since 2018. In addition to the failed World Cup, he has also reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020.
